AMERICAN RED CROSS MISSION

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

 

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Blood Mobile Volunteer - greet donors, serve refreshments, observe donors for reactions, schedule donors next appointment, schedule other volunteers to work, deliver and pick up canteen supplies to and from mobile, deliver posters to businesses, secure donated canteen items.     4 to 6 a month

Building Maintenance Coordinator - assist with general building maintenance - changing light bulbs, mowing grass, cleaning parking lot, making small repairs.     4 hours a month

Disaster Response Team Member - provide assistance to families whose homes may be damaged or destroyed by fire, provide canteen to responders on the scene of a disaster.  Training required:  Fulfilling Our Mission, Client Assistance, Mass Care and Shelter Operations.  Work locally only of respond to large national disasters.  On call for one month at a time - 4 times a year covering daytime hours, after office hours and weekends.   Generally 4 to 5 members on a team.  You may work a lot during your period or you may recieve no calls.

Fundraising Specialist - assist with fundraising efforts, soliciting donated items, selling tickets, securing sponsors, preparing mailings, writing grants and providing follow-up with donors.   3 or more hours per month depending on the time of the year.

Health and Safety Aide - assist CPR and First Aid instructors in preparing class materials, assisting during a class, cleaning manikins and other supplies.  Evening, day and weekend classes.  5 to 6 hours a month.

Office/ Reception Volunteer - answer phone, direct phone calls to appropriate service area, make copies, some data entry or other computer skills helpful, register class participants, receipt donations and event ticket sales.  General office duties. Work a regular weekly schedule - either 9 am to 1 pm or 1 pm to 4 pm.  Currently open:  Monday (either shift), Tuesday 1 pm, Wednesday 1 pm or Friday (either shift).

Vehicle Maintenance - oversee cleaning of chapter vehicles, regular oil changes, tire rotations. Alerting chapter staff as to vehicle issues.    2 hours a month.

 

These are just a few of many positions that are available at your local Red Cross.

Volunteers Amanda Sestito, Janet Carr and Neal Cadman selling Heater Meals during Red Cross Day at the Fort Steuben Mall.  Heaters meals can be purchased at the chapter and are excellent for your disaster supply kit.


Red Cross volunteers serve lunch after HAZ MAT drill at the Wintersville Fire Dept.

Volunteers participated in the drill working with the EOC and preparing to open a shelter, feed evacuated families and support other emergency responders.  The drill was a excellent learning experience for new volunteers.

Volunteers set up the tent in preparation for providing beverages, snacks, lunch and dinner during a river search and recovery effort at Stratton, OH for local fireman and dive search teams.
